Cover Story (view full-size image):
Fluorescent molecular rotors with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were reported for the real-time monitoring of polyurethane (PU) formation in solution. The agreement between viscosity and fluorescence variations during the polymerization progress suggests the innovative use of a low-cost fluorescence detection system based on an LED/photodiode, the assembly of which, can be mounted directly on the reaction apparatus. The general validity of the proposed experiments enabled the monitoring of polyurethane polymerization and suggests practical applications in a variety of industrial polymers, eliciting enhancements in viscosity during polymerization.
