The cover figure represents the logarithm of crude death rates from 1970 to 2017 for France along with the logarithm of extrapolated death rates from 2018 to 2050 obtained by elastic-net regularization and cross-validation. The use of regularization for the mortality surface allows obtaining a parsimonious mortality model which is robust to mortality perturbations. With the presence of a COVID-type effect, we found that our approach outperforms the P-spline model in terms of prediction and stability. View this paper.
