Welcome to the journal Photochem. Photochem is a new open access journal published by MDPI and covers the entire scope of photochemistry, including photosynthesis, photocatalysis, and photobiology, to name but a few. Common to these areas are the scientific challenges that arise when light interacts with, for example, molecular systems. Photochemical systems can use light to drive important chemical reactions or to generate electricity, which is of great practical significance for the development of sustainable sources of energy. Photochemical transformations of molecules may be constructive or degradative and are often quite distinct from conventional thermal transformations. The Sun delivers a huge gift of green energy, every day, to planet Earth’s surface. About 50% of this is in the UV and visible wavelength ranges. Photochemistry is, therefore, at the forefront of the huge environmental challenges of sustainability, energy harnessing, and energy conversion. Next to photo-driven energy conversion, at the focal point of Photochem, themes such as plant photochemistry and phototherapy are included.
The wide application of photochemistry in numerous fields has led to the launch of Photochem as a transdisciplinary platform to foster the collection, sharing, and dissemination of photochemistry research to the photochemistry community. Photochem aims to become a top-ranking journal in the area of photochemistry, with applications in all these important spheres, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Synthetic photochemistry;
  • Photocatalysis;
  • Photobiology;
  • Photodynamic therapy;
  • Photochromism;
  • Luminescence;
  • Spectroscopy;
  • Computational photochemistry;
  • Plant photochemistry;
  • Solar energy conversion;
  • Photochemistry for environmental remediation;
  • Processes and techniques in photochemistry.
