Dr. Giulia Stefenelli
Chair of the Board of Scientific Officers
Dr. Giulia Stefenelli holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences (2012) and a master's degree in Environmental Sciences and Technologies (2015) from the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Milano, Italy). She completed her PhD (2019) in Sciences at the ETH Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland) with a focus on atmospheric chemistry and air pollution research. She performed the research work at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Villigen, Switzerland) and wrote a Doctoral thesis on identification and chemical characterization of major sources of particulate matter in ambient air, as well as environmental chamber studies, including investigation of major gas phase emissions. She joined MDPI in June 2020 as Assistant Editor for IJERPH and Dermatopathology.
Dr. Unai Vicario
Scientific Officer—Public Health
Dr. Unai Vicario joined MDPI in May 2016. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry followed by a Master of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (2008); he received his PhD on this same topic from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in 2016. Unai has worked as co-Managing Editor for IJERPH, Managing Editor for Children and Fishes, and Section Managing Editor in the section on Animal Genetics and Genomics in Genes. He has also served as Editorial Section Leader in Barcelona. In 2019, he was appointed Publisher, and since 2020 he serves as Publisher Manager in Barcelona to develop constructive relationships with learned societies and institutions. His mission is to improve the publishing experience for the scientific community and promote the Open Access model.
Dr. Constanze Schelhorn
Scientific Officer—Physical Sciences
Dr. Constanze Schelhorn joined MDPI in June 2016. She holds a Master of Physics (2010) from the University of Würzburg and received her PhD in Biophysics (2015) from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in collaboration with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) Barcelona followed by a post-doc at IRB until May 2016. Constanze has worked as Section Managing Editor for Genes, Managing Editor of MCA, and Managing Editor of Quantum Beam Science. In 2019, she was appointed Publisher focusing on establishing collaborations with learned societies and has acted as Project Manager for JAMS since May 2020.
Dr. Ioana Craciun
Scientific Officer—Pharmaceutical Sciences
Dr. Ioana Craciun joined MDPI in August 2020. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida (2010) and a PhD from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics, University of Iowa (2016). Her PhD research focused on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel aminoglycoside derivatives for the treatment of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. Following her PhD, she completed a post-doc at the University of Basel focusing on the development of polymer-based systems for biomedical applications. Dr. Ioana Craciun also acts as Scientific Coordinator for Preprints.
Dr. Kana Umbricht
Scientific Officer—Life Sciences
Dr. Kana Umbricht joined MDPI in December 2019 as a Scientific Communication Specialist. She works for the journals, Agronomy and Conservation. She obtained her PhD in life sciences from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland (2019). Her research focused on molecular evolution of genes encoding RuBisCO subunits. Moreover, during her PhD, she lived in Sri Lanka and worked as a visiting researcher at the University of Peradeniya. Prior to her PhD, she worked at Keio University as a project researcher, at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA) / AgroParisTech in France as a research student, and at an NGO for food sustainability. She holds a MSc degree in agricultural science from the University of Tokyo (2010) and a BSc degree in agrobiology from Niigata University (2008) in Japan. She has experience working on diverse research areas, including molecular plant genetics, computational phylogenetics, cancer genetics, animal population genetics, and conservation genetics.
Franck Vazquez, Ph.D.
Scientific Officer—Life Sciences
Dr. Franck Vazquez joined MDPI in January 2014. He received his Ph.D. in Life and Health Sciences in 2004 from the University of Lille. He completed two post-docs in Basel, at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research and at the Botanical Institute of the University of Basel. From 2009 to 2013 Franck's research group was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. During his research career, Franck has published a total of 30 papers, which have been cited more than 5000 times. Franck served as the Chief Scientific Officer from February 2015 to April 2016, as the Chief Executive Officer from May 2016 to April 2019, and again as the Chief Scientific Officer from May 2019 to February 2021. Franck served as a member of the Board of Directors of OASPA from 2017 to 2020, and is a member of the DOAJ Council since September 2019.
Dr. Agnieszka Witkowska
Scientific Officer—Chemistry (Organic/Bioorganic)
Dr. Agnieszka Witkowska joined MDPI in May 2020. She studied Chemistry at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland (2013) and completed her PhD from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences (2019). Her PhD research focused on development of novel, fluorescent, 1,2-bis(pyridyl)ethylene derivatives with potential applications in nucleic acid chemistry. Dr. Agnieszka Witkowska acts as Assistant Editor for Molecules and Chemistry, as well as Chemical Samples Project Coordinator.
Dr. Marta Pasquini
Scientific Officer—Chemistry (Theoretical/Computational)
Dr. Marta Pasquini holds a Bachelor in Chemistry (2012) and a Master in Chemical Science (2014). She earned her PhD in Computational Chemistry from the Università degli Studi of Milan (Italy) in 2018. During her PhD, she spent four months as a visiting researcher at the Goethe University in Frankfurt (Germany). Before joining MDPI in July 2020 as Assistant Editor, she completed a post-doc at the Politecnico of Milan. Her research focused on quantum and classical simulations of complex chemical systems.
Dr. Peter Ribar
Scientific Officer—Chemistry (Organic/Bioorganic and Materials Chemistry)
Dr. Peter Ribar joined MDPI in April 2020 as Assistant Editor, Chemical Samples Project Coordinator, and recently as a new team member of the “Editorial process committee”. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (2011) and a master’s degree in Bioorganic and Organic Chemistry (2013) from the Comenius University in Bratislava (Bratislava, Slovakia). He completed his PhD (2019) in Chemistry at the University of Basel (Basel, Switzerland) with a focus on design and synthesis of novel polyaromatic hydrocarbons with applications in molecular electronics and spintronics.
Dr. Liliane Auwerter
Liliane joined MDPI in 2020. She studied Environmental Chemistry/Environmental Process Technology at the Federal University of Technology – Paraná, Brazil, from 2007 to 2011 and obtained her MSc in Water and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey, UK, whilst working at Thames Water as a Research Assistant. In 2015, she joined the Fluid Dynamics and Environmental and Water Resource Engineering sections as a PhD student at Imperial College London, and graduated in May 2020. Her research focused on developing self-healing low-friction materials for water transport.
Dr. Carla Aloè
Scientific Officer—Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
Dr. Carla Aloè joined MDPI in September 2020 as an Associate Publisher. She holds both a bachelor's degree in Media Studies (2007) and a master's degree in Modern Philology (2010) from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. Afterwards, she moved to the UK where she completed her MPhil (2012) and PhD (2016) in Early Modern Literature at the University of Birmingham, specifically focusing on the construction of the New World mythology as it appears in Early Modern Italian epic poems. During her PhD studies, Carla was the recipient of fellowships at the Huntington Library (USA), Harvard University (USA), and the University of British Columbia (Canada). Before joining MDPI, Carla worked as a Research Topic Team Lead at Frontiers where she was responsible for the organization of Special Issues for a large portfolio of journals.
Yu Lin, Ph.D.
Scientific Officer—Material Science
Yu Lin was born in Hanchuan, Hubei Province, China. He graduated with a BSc from Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) in June 2010, majoring in materials chemistry before working as research assistant in the Experimental Teaching Center of WHUT (2010-2011) while working as a part-time editorial assistant for the MDPI international scientific journal Materials.
Yu Lin then studied advanced energy materials in WHUT (2011-2014) for his MSc. During this period, he worked as part-time RD technician for WUT new energy Co., Ltd. He graduated with a doctorate (materials physics and chemistry) at RWTH Aachen in 2018 after studying for 4 years in the group of Prof. Dr. Werner Lehnert, Laboratory of high temperature fuel cell, IEK-3, Jülich Research Center, Germany. He is the principal author of 10 publications.
