Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few decades, there has been a dramatic surge in the number of articles published in the literature that focus on room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs).  Interest in these salts has caused research to soar past the point of only being a curiosity to one constituting extensive efforts aimed at understanding these materials. As a result, ILs are arguably among the most studied materials in the physical sciences. DESs (particularly choline derived versions) experienced a similar surge in recent years. The tremendous amount of work by researchers across many disciplines arises from the ever-growing number of applications in areas such as chemical synthesis, engineering, and the fabrication of electrochemical devices, among many others. 

It is often the case that applications of ‘new’ materials frequently outpace the development of a detailed, molecular-level understanding.  Therefore, the importance of building a detailed, fundamental understanding and knowledge base of these solvents is necessarily and progressively more important. Appropriately, much of the research published to date (both theoretical and experimental) has focused on neat solvents. However, as the diversity of applications continues to expand, there is increased interest in studying ILs and DESs in combination with traditional molecular cosolvents to modify their properties for expanded utility. 

The chemistry, physics, and engineering of IL and DES systems requires both experimental and theoretical approaches to achieve a desired understanding of the underpinnings that drive the widening array of applications. To this end, a complete picture will only be achieved when a concerted effort involving all available tools is applied. This Special Issue seeks to highlight new results and recent perspectives that discuss the various properties and applications of both IL and DES-based solutions toward the advancement of a more complete understanding of their chemistry and engineering. 

You are cordially invited to contribute your important research results to this Special Issue in which we will present a collection of work advances our understanding in IL and DES solutions.
