Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims at discussing the benefits and costs of crop specialization in agriculture in developing countries.

Diversifying the crops mix in agricultural practices helps farmers to decrease the overall production risk by selecting a mix of crops which have a low or negative correlation in their productivity. To this regard, crop diversification strategies have been pursued worldwide as a way to improve household income. The rationale for diversification strategies is based on the fact that crop rotation has beneficial effects for the soil nutrients; guarantees environmental protection; potentially reduces pests and diseases; and increases food security by offering farmers access to sufficient, nutritious, and diversified food in areas where markets are not available.

Despite the important role that diversification plays in agriculture, there are few studies that explicitly relate this practice to indicators of agricultural yield, farmers nutrition, and well-being.

The objective of this Special Issue is to create a debate on the benefits (and costs) of crop diversification in less developed areas of the world. Theoretical and applied contributions are welcomed.

Organic farming is a branch of interest in the context of the global economy oriented at reducing pollution, increasing food quality and reducing the impact on the environment. The objective of this research is to identify the main components of organic farming in Romania and their dynamics in the period 2010–2020 to identify changes in agricultural policy elements with an impact on the development strategy of Romanian agriculture in the medium term. The methodology used aims at the analytical and empirical research of the changes in the agricultural policy in the period 2010–2020 and the quantification of a statistical tool to evaluate the impact of these changes in the development of organic farming. The results are useful for decision makers to adopt viable medium-term strategies for organic farming. Full article
