Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the last decade, the plant research field has made tremendous progress in understanding the microbial diversity associated with plant roots, both in wild and in field conditions. At the same time, the knowledge on how some selected root-associated microbes can positively influence plant health, productivity, and tolerance to stresses has pushed toward the field application of microbial inoculants, and the implementation of their use into agricultural practices.

However, challenges in bringing these procedures into effective applications still exist. A plethora of agronomical factors shape the root-associated community assembly and functioning, with aspects such as farming practices, plant genotype, and inoculant formulation playing a crucial role in determining the success of a microbiota-based cultivation strategy.

This Special Issue thus focuses on the field applications of beneficial plant–microbe associations to improve crop health and performance. Papers are welcome that describe original research as well as perspective views, to add pieces of knowledge that will contribute to turn these beneficial interactions into agricultural practices.
