Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The European Commission has updated its list of critical raw materials, now containing up to 30 materials. Other regions are also building up their own list of key materials. For example, USA has a list of 35 minerals deemed critical to national security and the economy. These materials are essential to the functioning and integrity of a wide range of industrial ecosystems. In particular, critical raw materials are those that are most important economically and have a high supply risk. In fact, the COVID-19 crisis during 2020 has revealed just how fast and how deeply global supply chains can be disrupted.

Promoting the circular economy is the best way to limit the extreme pressure on the planet caused by several aspects such as the increase of greenhouse emissions, decline of ecosystems or loss of biodiversity. Therefore, finding new ways to recover these essential materials from waste within a circular economy framework is a priority for sustainability. This Special Issue compiles cutting edge reviews and research papers addressing resource-efficient and economically-feasible techniques for reuse and recycling processes targeting these critical raw materials.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
