Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The need for spectral efficiency is forcing the implementation of single frequency networks, as the most efficient method of frequency re-using.

However, the orography may not permit the total coverage of certain areas, making the use of gap-fillers necessary. In such a case, gap fillers should have both the receiver and the transmitter working at the same frequency and are called on-channel repeaters (OCRs).

The most relevant impairment experienced by OCRs with input and output filters operating at the same frequency is the presence of a coupling-channel between the transmitting and receiving antennas, that produces an echo effect.

This phenomenon not only causes a degradation of the repeated signal, but also represents a positive feedback that could lead to the instability of device. In such a case, the digital signal is jammed as a consequence of the A/D converter saturation.

Existing digital solutions include general purpose schemes able to counteract the echo effects by means of the estimation and the suppression of the coupling channel, as well as ad hoc implementation based on the characteristics of the signal to be repeated (e.g., OFDM).  

This Special Issue is devoted to researchers who propose novel or improved solutions to the problem of unwanted echoes in OCRs. The proposed solutions could be applied to both DVB-T and cellular scenarios where gap fillers with input and output filters operating at the same frequency are used to extend the coverage.
