Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to contribute to a Special Issue of the journal Applied Sciences, “Organs on a Chips”, which aims to present the microfluidic cell culture device that simulates the activities, mechanics and physiological response of entire organs and organ systems, a type of artificial organ. It constitutes the subject matter of significant biomedical engineering, more precisely in bio-MEMS.

An organ-on-a-chip is a microfluidic cell culture device created with micro-fabrication process technology that contains continuously perfused chambers inhabited by living cells arranged to regenerate into tissue and organ-level physiology. By recapitulating the multicellular architectures, tissue-tissue interface, physicochemical microenvironments and vascularization of the body. These devices produce the tissue and organ level functionality, which is not possible with conventional 2D or 3D culture systems. They also enable high-resolution, real-time imaging and in vitro analysis of biochemical, genetic, and metabolic activities of living cells in a functional tissue and organ context. This technology has great potential to advance the study of tissue development, organ physiology, drug screening and disease etiology. In the context of drug discovery and pharmacokinetics, organ-on-a-chip is having upper hand and great potential against costlier, time taking conventional techniques. Other aspects and applications of organs on a chips, besides the example listed above, are also very welcome.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
