Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The single molecule detection technologies including single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer, optical tweezers and magnetic tweezers are based on the ultra-sensitive detection of single molecules and their manipulation, unveiling the hidden characteristics of the molecules such as the dynamic structural changes or the existence of the short-lived intermediate states during their reaction pathway by removing the spatial and temporal averaging. Especially, many studies employing the single-molecule detection technologies have revealed the molecular mechanism of biomolecules and biological systems, for instance, protein-nucleic acids interaction, molecular motors, vesicle transport and more, which have not been elucidated by the conventional ensemble techniques. In addition to contributing to discover the molecular mechanism of biomolecules, they have opened a new era of fluorescence microscopy, so-called the super-resolution microscopy that can overcome the diffraction-limited spatial resolution, revolutionizing the field of fluorescence microscopy. Moreover, the various techniques based on the single-molecule detection have been continuously developed, widening its application. This Special Issue of Applied Sciences on “Advances in Single Molecule Detection Technology” intends to celebrate these developments by bringing research articles and reviews together focusing on single molecule approaches to study and understand biomolecules and biological systems. We would like this Special Issue to assemble exciting papers.
