Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPM) in Health and Disease

Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) are a group of lipid mediators (lipoxins, resolvins, protectins, and maresins). The discovery of the SPM family has led to an advancement in our understanding of inflammatory diseases, such as periodontal diseases or arthritis and many other inflammation-related diseases. SPM have been found to initiate the resolution of inflammation and thus restore the inflammatory homeostasis. The latter is crucial to maintaining health and protective immunity. Many inflammatory diseases are considered an expression of an uncontrolled inflammatory protective reaction, and anti-inflammatory drugs would block the inflammatory process as long as they are prescribed, but a rebound of inflammation would occur if they are stopped. Hence, SPM are considered novel promising immune-resolvent agents that can induce an arrest of the inflammatory process instead of temporarily blocking it. Additionally, they can potentially be biomarkers of health and risk indicators in many diseases. Furthermore, recent data suggest that they can play roles in controlling biofilm formation and enhance antibiotic activity.

This Special Issue will welcome all research related to SPM detection and dosage in health or disease states. It will also welcome all research on the use of SPM molecules as therapeutic agents in any inflammatory disease. Original scientific reports, review articles, commentary, and perspective papers are accepted.
