Infertility problems affect several millions of people around the world, and have a negative effect on many couples. Male testicular disorders represent one of the major causes of future fertility problems. Another problem is that some of these disorders occur early, and need correction during infancy and possible reevaluation of fertility late in adolescence. Cryptorchidism is a congenital malformation with a potential future impact on fertility in adulthood. Different factors seem to influence testicular descent during the fetal period. The exact pathophysiologic events are still controversial and the effect on the fertility potential is still under-investigated. Varicocele and torsion of the testes are both acquired conditions that could impact severely on fertility after puberty. Different therapeutic strategies have recently been proposed that seem to counteract the harmful effects of blood stasis and oxidative stress in both varicocele and testicular torsion. Disorders of sexual development are congenital conditions with different pathogenetic mechanisms with several phenotic features. Different genetic variants have recently been identified, but fertility seems to be severely compromised in both males and females.
This Special Issue aims to investigate new insights into the pathophysiologic mechanisms and therapeutic strategies in testicular disorders. Original research and reviews are welcomed.
