Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, carbon-based catalysts (such as carbon nitride, etc.) have been regarded as very competitive materials in metal catalysts due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In fact, when carbon materials (such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, MOFs, COFs, Mxene) form composite catalysts with other metals, the kinetic process of the catalytic reaction can be further improved due to the large specific surface of and the good conductivity of the carbon materials. Therefore, carbon-based catalysts have become a research hotspot in various fields. However, some preparation methods of carbon-based catalysts have disadvantages such as being complicated to process, not environmentally friendly, and with a low yield. In addition, although carbon-based catalysts have been widely studied in water and wastewater treatment, application cost and efficiency still need to be further improved. Therefore, in order to broaden the application of carbon-based catalysts in water purification, it is necessary to further optimize the preparation method and explore its removal mechanism of pollutants in water to obtain the best environmental treatment efficiency.

This Special Issue aims to explore efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly preparation methods for carbon-based catalysts and to explore their potential applications in the field of water and wastewater treatment. This topic aims to provide new ideas for effectively promoting the application of carbon-based catalysts in the water environment.

We particularly welcome contributions concerning:

  • Preparation of carbon-based catalysts;
  • Application for seawater desalination;
  • Application for heavy metals pollution control;
  • Application for organic pollution control;
  • Application for nitrogen pollution control;
  • Application for phosphorus pollution control.

It is widely considered that photocatalysis is an effective and eco-friendly method of dealing with organic pollutants dissolved in water. Nonetheless, photocatalysts still have some drawbacks, such as poor visible-light absorption, easy recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and limited active sites. In this study, bismuth ferrite coupled with biochar material (BiFeO3/BC) was simply synthesized, and its photocatalysis reactivity was systemically examined under an irradiation of λ > 400 nm. The experimental results showed that under a relatively acidic environment, the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride reached 95%. Using a variety of characterization investigations, we analyzed the morphology structure and chemical composition of BiFeO3/BC. In consideration of simple preparation and high respondence toward visible light, further explorations of BiFeO3/BC and its properties and optimized degradation conditions are worthwhile. In order to better grasp the development and trends of tannery wastewater (TWW) treatment research, this paper provides a review of the TWW treatment research dynamics based on the Web of Science (WoS) database and using CiteSpace software. The research dynamics, hot topics, evolutionary history and research trends in this field are revealed. The results showed that research related to TWW treatment has shown a high growth trend in the number of articles in recent years, and India was outstanding in terms of influence in this area. The keyword clustering analysis showed that the main research hotspots in the field of TWW treatment were biological treatment processes (phytoremediation, constructed wetlands, anaerobic treatment and biofilm reactors) and chemical treatment processes (coagulation and flocculation, and advanced oxidation processes). The analysis of new research frontiers showed that the bioremediation and the application of biofuel cells in TWW will become important research directions in the future. Full article

To solve the problem of the poor treatment of high concentration landfill leachate, an electro-assisted ultraviolet (UV)/zero-valent iron (ZVI) synergic activated persulfate (PS) system was used to treat landfill leachate. The effects of PS and ZVI dosage, initial pH value, and current density on the removal efficiency of COD and NH3-N in landfill leachate were investigated. The treatment effects of single PS, single electrochemical, UV/PS, electro-assisted ZVI activated PS, and electro-assisted ZVI/UV co-activated PS were compared. At the same time, UV-visible and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy were performed on the landfill leachate before and after treatment. The results show that under the optimal conditions of initial pH = 3, the dosage of PS/12COD = 1, ZVI = 1.5 g/L, current density 62.5 mA/cm2, and t = 6 h, most of the macromolecular organic substances such as humic acid and fulvic acid were removed. Removal efficiencies of COD, NH3-N, and Chroma reached 81.99%, 89.90%, and 99.75%, respectively. The BOD5/COD value increased from 0.23 to 0.46. In addition, the radical identification results showed that the degradation of COD was due to the combined action of sulfate radicals (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and that SO4•− was dominant. The combined means of synergistic activation of PS for landfill leachate treatment was significantly better than that of single means of PS activation, confirming that electrically assisted ZVI/UV synergistic activation of PS is a promising method for landfill leachate treatment. Graphene-based materials have gained a lot of scientific interest in the research era of modern technology, which can be quite flexible. Graphene has become popular as a potential material for the manufacture of a wide range of technologies due to its remarkable electrical, mechanical, and optical traits. Due to these excellent characteristics, the derivatives of graphene can be functionalized in various applications including environmental, medical, electronic, defence applications, and many more. In this review paper, we discussed the different synthesis methods for the extraction of graphene and its derivatives. The different traits of graphene and its derivatives such as structural, mechanical, and optical were also discussed. An extensive literature review on the application of graphene-based composites is presented in this work. We also outlined graphene’s potential in the realm of environmental purification through different techniques such as filtration, adsorption, and photocatalysis. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities of graphene and its derivatives for advanced environmental applications were reported. Full article

The application of modified carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) in the field of wastewater treatment has received much attention in recent years. To better understand the research progress and trends of MCNTs in wastewater treatment, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature on the application of MCNTs in wastewater, highlight how it has evolved over the years, and identify the sectors for which the study could be beneficial. The CiteSpace software was used to perform the analysis of the data in which specific maps were used to represent the network of the relationships among countries, journals, organizations, authors, and keywords related to the investigated topic and subtopics. The results show that in the time frame of the study, most attention has been focused on the functional modification of carbon nanotubes, the study of their application in water treatment, and the study of the patterns and mechanisms of pollutant removal. The recycling of MCNTs and their environmental risks have not been sufficiently studied. In conclusion, the recycling and regeneration methods of MCNTs, as well as the potential ecological, environmental and health risks will be the focus of future research and more research should be invested. Due to its highly developed pore structure and large specific surface area, activated carbon is often used as a catalyst or catalyst carrier in catalytic ozonation. Although the pore structure of activated carbon plays a significant role in the treatment of wastewater and the mass transfer of ozone molecules, the effect is complicated and unclear. Because different application scenarios require catalysts with different pore structures, catalysts with appropriate pore structure characteristics should be developed. In this review, we systematically summarized the current adjustment methods for the pore structure of activated carbon, including raw material, carbonization, activation, modification, and loading. Then, based on the brief introduction of the application of activated carbon in catalytic ozonation, the effects of pore structure on catalytic ozonation and mass transfer are reviewed. Furthermore, we proposed that the effect of pore structure is mainly to provide catalytic active sites, promote free radical generation, and reduce mass transfer resistance. Therefore, large external surface area and reasonable pore size distribution are conducive to catalytic ozonation and mass transfer. Full article
