Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

Mitochondria are important organelles for the maintenance of cellular bioenergetics, calcium homeostasis, and redox balance. Neurons are highly dependent on the mitochondrial function to meet their demanding bioenergetic needs as well as calcium and oxidative homeostasis needs. Therefore, mitochondrial health is of vital importance for neuronal function and survival. Even minor alterations in mitochondrial function or mitochondrial turnover can cause deleterious effects on the survival and function of neurons. Mitochondrial dysfunction comprises a dominant pathological pathway in acute neuronal injury as well as in chronic neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Understanding how mitochondrial dysfunction results in different neurodegenerative diseases or how different neurodegenerative processes or neuronal injuries converge to mitochondrial dysfunction holds an important key for therapeutic intervention in acute and chronic neurodegeneration.
