Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit your work to the Special Issue "Polymer Coatings, Films, and Dyes." Numerous polymer coatings and thin films can be applied to the surface of different materials such as plastic, glass, metal, textiles, etc., modifying the surface properties of the substrate such as adhesion, wettability, biocompatibility, bioactivity, corrosion resistance, wash and wear resistance, and/or changing physical, mechanical and optical properties, and/or tailoring special functionalities such as flame-retardancy, super-hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, thermal and electro-conductivity, anti-bacterial, self-cleaning, heat-generating, UV-shielding ability, etc. In combination with functional dyes and pigments, they could serve as protective and decorative layers with enhanced durable properties. Moreover, chromic compounds change colour upon external stimuli, e.g., light, temperature, solvents, electrical current, ions, pH, magnetic field, biological sources, etc., changing absorption/reflection/transmission of light in two or three (UV, Vis, and NIR) spectral areas at the same time. Various coating techniques can be employed for the application of polymers, films, and dyes on materials´ surfaces, such as spray-coating, dip-coating, roll-to-roll coating, spin-coating, plasma-assisted coating, etc., and herein, different operational parameters can be changed/optimised, depending on material/compound compatibility, desired final properties, and end uses.

This Special Issue aims to cover the most recent experimental and theoretical developments in the field of polymer coatings, films, and dyes with focus on their preparation, characterisation, applications, and durability. Researchers in the field from both academia and industry are invited to contribute manuscripts in the form of original full-length articles, communications, and critical reviews. In particular, the topics of interest of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Polymer coatings
  • Surface modification
  • Thin films and interfaces
  • Barrier coatings
  • Biodegradable coatings
  • Multifunctionality
  • Functional dyes and pigments
  • Protective applications
  • Technical applications
  • Biomedical applications

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The facile, simple, highly efficient, and fluorine-free fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces on fabrics with high durability has attracted considerable attention because of its urgent practical application. The simple dip-coating method was adopted to make a stable and durable polydimethylsiloxane/stearic acid/silica (PDMS/STA/SiO2) superhydrophobic fabric. The fabric’s surface morphology, roughness, and composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The PDMS/STA/SiO2-coated fabric: demonstrated strong superhydrophobicity (a water contact angle (WCA) of around 163°), efficiently repelled different liquids (milk, coffee, orange juice, Coca-Cola, and 1 M of HCl and NaOH) with a contact angle above 155°, had excellent self-cleaning performance, and retained superhydrophobicity with a WCA greater than 150° after 72 h of ultraviolet irradiation and 700 cycles of mechanical abrasion. The PDMS/STA/SiO2 coating had few influences on the color fastness of the fabric. Superhydrophobic coatings are expected to be practically applied in the textile industry. Full article
