Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is dedicated to ethnic cosmetics. Indeed, today, the vast majority of the world’s population constitutes persons with skin of color, including a heterogeneous group of people with skin phototypes which fall within III to VI.

Racial differences in skin physiology and reaction to environmental stimuli are more and more described, but notwithstanding the increasing number of studies, data are often conflicting. In fact, it is difficult to define and to interpret the cutaneous pathophysiologic phenomena that are not only anatomical and functional characteristics of ethnic groups, but also the result of socioeconomic, hygienic, and nutritional factors. Furthermore, skin status may be influenced by climate, circadian rhythms, and changes in circulating sex hormones or stress hormones. Indeed, even though it is well established that all humans belong to the same species, many physical differences exist among members of the human population. Ethnic groups often need very specialized cosmetics to reach superior efficacy and compliance. Pigmentation is a problem in dark and Asian skin, and black and curly hair needs special products for styling. Some skin types are more prone to developing irritation, whereas some are more exposed to acne and related diseases.
