Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Within the last decade, the energy sector has entered an era of rapid transformation. Approaching the end of their productive lifespan, older coal, nuclear, and natural gas power stations will never be replaced by the same technologies. In fact, many of them are faced with forced shutdowns before they even reach the end of their projected operating life because of increased maintenance costs and international efforts for climate change abatement. Unprecedented innovation in the renewable energy and smart grid sectors delivers a landscape that challenges every aspect of the energy supply chain and the affected energy intensive industries.

Against this backdrop, attention on securitizing energy supply has remained a focal point of interest for researchers, policy makers, and the wider industry. However, the pretext of what constitutes secure energy supply has been through a radical transformation in a number of fronts: Uncertainty over primary energy resource supply; highly distributed infrastructure; household prosumerism; new and conflicting data sources; and the role of interconnected networks are only some of the ingredients of the new and forthcoming status quo.

Novel approaches for understanding and responding to energy security needs are required. The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish a set of articles that will explore the role of the aforementioned challenges in refreshing our paradigms for energy security and make them suitable for the future. There is no restriction on discipline or methodological approaches used as it is acknowledged that energy security requires multidisciplinary thinking. Authors are encouraged to submit research that is bold in conceptualization and analytically robust while at the same time being able to be translated into practice.
