Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The FEMTI 2021 (Frontiers of Energy Management and Technology Innovation: towards zero emissions) is a conference in the field of energy and buildings, organized by the PhD students of the University of Pisa. This inaugural edition of the FEMTI is dedicated to the latest innovation in the fields of energy efficiency and comfort in the civil and industrial fields.

In the last decades, the awareness of sustainability and the need for reducing energy consumptions has become increasingly relevant, due to the necessity to provide solutions to relevant issues such as anthropogenically induced climate change. In this scenario, both civil and industrial sectors play a key role in defining the strategies that are decisive to provide solutions to such problems. Furthermore, in accordance with the concerns of energy management, the increasing time that people are spending indoors led to the need for providing safe and healthy indoor environments, also in relation to the pandemic and post-pandemic situation. In this direction, Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) is getting wide recognition by cutting-edge research as the element to combine energy efficiency, savings, and wellbeing.

To highlight the major innovation in this field, the conference topics, thus those of the special issue will focus on:

  • Building performance and efficiency measures
  • Building energy management and Renewable Energy System (RES)
  • Industrial systems and energy management
  • Thermal control in hostile environments
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Building Energy Simulation (BES) and thermal control in buildings
  • Thermal comfort
  • Local thermal comfort and Personal Comfort systems

The conference paper that will be accepted and presented at the conference are invited to submit at this special issue. The selection of the deserving articles will be performed by the Scientific Committee of the Conference. The official website of the conference is available at: http://www.femti.ing.unipi.it/.

The guest editors would like to acknowledge Eng. Giacomo Cillari, Eng. Giulia Lamberti, and Eng. Roberto Rugani from the University of Pisa for their efforts in organizing the conference and their contribution to the creation of this special issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

In the European Union, 40% of the overall final energy consumption is attributable to the buildings sector. A reason for such data may be found considering that the great majority of the building stock is more than 40 years old. According to the European Commission, an interesting potential lies in the refurbishment of the building sector, and heat pump technology has been recognized as one of the most cost-effective solutions to tackle the environmental issue of this sector. Regarding heat pump technology, ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) have been proven to be the most efficient solution on equal boundary conditions. Despite this, in most EU states’ markets, GSHPs hold only a small market share with respect to air-source heat pumps. In this paper, the state of art and possible future developments of GSHP technology have been reviewed together with a focus on the potential of such technology, most of all on the refurbishment of existing buildings, and on the obstacles to its spread. The state of art of borehole heat exchangers has been studied, focusing on the parameters characterizing the outside pipe and the pipe itself, i.e., pipe and grout materials. Moreover, an overview on the last developments involving refrigerants and secondary fluids is given. Finally, the design and control strategies of GSHPs have been reviewed. Full article
