Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Critical to the success of an energetic process is the proper selection of the oxygen carrier intermediate material that is usually composed of primary metal oxide, support, and promoter/dopent agents. In the last few years, oxygen carriers, ranging from synthetic composites, natural ores and waste metals, have been extensively investigated.

High reactivity in reduction and oxidation reactions, high carrying capacity, long term recyclability, high strength, low production cost, low environmental impacts and high oxygen transfer capacity are some of the criteria that feasible oxygen carrier materials should fulfill. The selection of oxygen carriers depends as well on the fuel and the operational conditions of the system.

Scientists continue research to discover and develop suitable materials for real applications with the expectation that the energy technologies they enable will one day be very affordable and green.

In order to reflect continuous progress in the developments of novel oxygen carriers’ materials and their processing technologies, Energies will publish a new topical issue entitled꞉ “Recent Advances in the Development of Novel Solid State Materials as Oxygen Carriers: Thermodynamics, Synthesis and Energetic Applications” and dedicated to recent achievements, hot topics and key problems in this field. This field integrates many aspects of chemistry, solid-state physics, heterogeneous catalysis, thermodynamics and even mathematical and computational sciences. This Special Issue will highlight all the advances and challenges related to oxygen carrier material development.

On behalf of the editorial team, we have pleasure to invite all of you to contribute to this Special Issue with your state-of-the-art findings.

We expect submissions covering, but not limited, to the following topics:

  • Synthesis and characterization of novel oxygen carrier materials
  • Challenges in the development of metallic oxygen carrier materials
  • Reactivity, integrity and stability of the carrier materials
  • Kineticmodels and reactions mechanisms of the oxygen carrier conversion
  • Thermodynamics of the oxygen carrier system
  • Carbon capture and biomass conversion technologies
  • Chemical looping combustion
  • Hydrogen production and storage
  • Evaluation in pilot plant, scale-up production

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

A small laboratory fluidized bed reactor is used to test the chemical reactivity of solid particles fluidized with a gas. The novelty of the system is that it can be used for testing any solid particles, and, in this work, oxygen carriers with Mn/Si oxide supported on TiO2 are used to present the possibilities and layout of the laboratory system. The system is equipped with automatic valves that make it possible to rapidly change the gas conditions in the reactor. The setup facilitates solid particle testing using a sample of a few grams with gas-solid contact conditions relevant for a full-scale fluidized bed. With this small system, it is possible to mimic a section or a part of a larger system. It is also possible to test extreme conditions that can occur in a bigger unit. The system is designed for determining chemical reactivity in combustion, gasification, and reforming, but it can be used for investigating any type of gas-solid reaction in fluidized bed conditions. The setup presented here is one of the smallest possible devices that can be realized while maintaining fluidized bed conditions. Full article
