Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Classical thermodynamics, a very successful phenomenological theory that has withstood major scientific revolutions, deals with energetics of physical systems in the thermodynamic limit, which is defined by taking both a large volume and large number of particles, and at the same time keeping the particle density finite. The scientific efforts of the past two decades has made it possible to control and manipulate small quantum systems with great accuracy, and therefore the energetics of such systems calls for the development of a theory of thermodynamics beyond traditional thermodynamics. Quantum thermodynamics is such a theory and is deemed to incorporate the quantum features, finite-size corrections, role of microscopic symmetries, and non-equilibrium phenomena among others. Recent advances in quantum thermodynamics have suggested the potential impact of quantum information theory on the development of quantum thermodynamics in its foundations and potential usage. Despite the notable progress in the understanding of quantum thermodynamics, there are still many open questions ranging from foundational to applied aspects.

This Special Issue of the Entropy journal on “Advances in the Interplay between Quantum Thermodynamics and Information Theory” aims to collect recent developments in the rapidly growing field of Quantum Thermodynamics, with an emphasis on the role of the Quantum Information Theory in the development of Quantum thermodynamics and vice-versa. More specifically, the topics in this issue include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Information theoretic approaches to quantum thermodynamics

Moreover, other topics on thermodynamics and information theory within the scope of the Entropy journal are also welcome. All papers in this Special Issue will be thoroughly reviewed. We hope that this Special Issue will make the rapidly growing field of quantum thermodynamics accessible to a broad audience.
