Fishes 2024 Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Fishes will be granting the Travel Award to one junior scientist. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the Fishes Editorial Board.
This award provides financial support for the winner to attend an international conference in the field of fishes and aquatic animals to be held in 2024, in order to hold a presentation, present a poster, or both.
Candidate Requirements:
– Postdoctoral fellows or PhD students;
– Plans to attend an international conference in 2024 (oral presentation or poster).
Required Application Documents:
– Information of the conference the applicant is planning to attend and the abstract that will be submitted;
– Curriculum Vitae and list of publications;
– Justification letter describing the focus of the research (max. 800 words);
– Letter of recommendation from the supervisor, research director, or department head, which also confirms the applicant’s status as a postdoctoral fellow/PhD student.
The winner will be awarded CHF 800, an offer to publish a paper free of charge before the end of 2024 in Fishes after peer-review, and an electronic certificate.
Please submit your applications for the Fishes 2024 Travel Award online by 31 January 2024. Prizes will be awarded at the end of March 2024 and announced on the Fishes website.

Fishes 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award
Dear Colleagues,
The journal Fishes is inviting applications for the 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award. This prize will be awarded to a PhD student or recently qualified PhD fellow who has produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential. The applications will be assessed by an evaluation committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Maria Angeles Esteban.
Eligibility and Requirements:
– The candidate must be a PhD student or recently qualified PhD fellow who has produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential;
– The PhD thesis must be their original work;
– The PhD thesis must be defended in 2023.
Required Application Documents:
– An executive summary of the PhD thesis in English of around 3000 words;
– A letter from the PhD supervisor recommending the candidate for consideration for this award;
– The candidate’s CV, including a list of publications connected with the thesis;
– An electronic copy of the PhD thesis;
– A scanned copy of the PhD diploma (or certificate of studying at a school or research institute as a PhD student going to graduate or participate in graduation thesis defenses).
Selection Criteria:
– Quality of resume and publications;
– Relevance of the candidate and research description;
– Novelty of the candidate’s PhD thesis;
– Strength of the recommendation letter;
– Anticipated academic potential;
– Originality and impact of the research.
Prizes:
– Bonus (CHF 800);
– Certificate;
– Offer to publish one paper free of charge in Fishes after peer review before the end of 2024.
The application deadline is 29 February 2024. The winner will be announced on the Fishes website by the end of April 2024.

Fishes 2023 Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
As Editor-in-Chief of Fishes, I am pleased to announce the winner of the Fishes 2023 Travel Award.
The award has been granted to Dr. Daniela Rosado, a postdoctoral researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB, Olhão, Portugal, and her expertise is fish microbiome. As the awardee, she will receive an honorarium of CHF 800, an offer to publish one paper with a 50% discount on the APC after peer review in Fishes by the end of 2023, and an electronic certificate.
With so many high-quality applicants, the evaluation process and final decision were incredibly challenging. Fishes 2019 Winner announcement - Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Evaluation Committee, it is our pleasure to announce thatthe winner of the 2019 Fishes Travel Award is Mr. Daniel Coffey.
Mr. Daniel Coffey is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Hawaii, USA. His research is broadly focused on understanding how marine predators utilize and move through their environment and investigating what mechanisms drive this behavior, such as physiological constraints induced by the environment. On behalf of Fishes, he will be awarded 800 Swiss Francs to attend the 2019 International Conference on Fish Telemetry (ICFT), which will be held 24–28 June 2019 in Arendal, Norway. There, he will present his work on “Assessing the Performance and Habitat Suitability of a Vertically Migrating Deepwater Shark in a Changing Climate”.

Fishes 2018 Winner announcement - Travel Award
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Travel Award 2018 Committee, it is our pleasure to announce that the winner of the 2018 Fishes Travel Award, is Dr. Elvis Genbo Xu.
Elvis Genbo Xu holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Ecology in the field of environmental risk assessment with special reference to the impacts of endocrine disruptors. Dr. Genbo has been selected from among the nearly 140 excellent nominees.
He is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering, McGill University, Canada, where he continues his toxicology studies. So far he has authored 45 peer reviewed manuscripts and two patents. On behalf of Fishes, he will be awarded 800 Swiss Francs to attend the 2018 SETAC Asia-Pacific Conference, that will be held September 16–19 2018 in Daegu, South Korea. There, he will present his work on “Integration of microRNA and mRNA in early life stages of mahi after exposure to Deepwater Horizon oil”.
