World Fisheries Congress 2021 Program Launch: Sharing Our Oceans and Rivers

The first iteration of the World Fisheries Congress 2021 program is now available, featuring plenary and keynote addresses, presentations, workshops and events delivered in a hybrid online and in-person format from Adelaide, South Australia.

The Congress program is driven by the overarching theme of ‘sharing our oceans and rivers’ and is guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on the conservation and the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources. The Congress Keynote Address will be delivered by the Ambassador of the United Nations Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson.

Chair of the World Fisheries Congress 2021, Professor Gavin Begg, stated that commercial, recreational and indigenous fisheries not only share the same waters but also the same aim for a sustainable future.

“In a time when we cannot be together in person, the Congress offers online delegates all over the world a digital functionality that provides delegates with opportunities to connect with Congress presenters, the capacity to explore the Congress’ exhibition, options for accessing program sessions on-demand or live, and engage with the global fisheries community through networking opportunities”, he said.

“The Congress Steering and International Program Committees and its partners have delivered a program that brings delegates access to the world’s leading research innovations, insights into new fisheries management approaches and key policies to support the future of our fisheries.”

The World Fisheries Congress features four key themes:

Sustainable fisheries as they relate to the assessment of fisheries, regulation and regulation enforcement, COVID-19 impacts on fisheries and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 focused on the conservation and the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources.

Fish and aquatic ecosystems as they relate to biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem function and integrated management, including by-catch, climate change and ecosystem-based fisheries management.

Fisheries and society’s contribution to sustainable development, including key global challenges and the contribution people make to global fisheries.

The future of fish and fisheries to explore emerging technologies and the future of fisheries.

Due to global travel restrictions driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Fisheries Congress 2021 program is delivered in an integrated online and in-person format. Both in-person and online delegates will have access to interactive touchpoints with presenters, workshop discussions and fellow delegates.

Online delegates will also have access to Congress exhibitions as well as the same opportunity as in-person delegates to shape panel session topics with questions submitted in advance or live through integrated digital platforms.

The World Fisheries Congress 2021 is delivered in partnership with World Council of Fisheries Societies, the Australian Society for Fish Biology and the Australian Commonwealth and South Australian State Governments.
