Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rural communities are characteristically less populated and not as well-resourced compared with urban/metropolitan counterparts. The diversity of health care in rural communities is directly related to population density: Decreasing population equates with reduced locally available health care services and potentially compromised population health. To address rural health disparities many nations globally have developed innovative models of care that are inclusive of, or delivered only by, nurses and midwives. Nurses and midwives are the largest group of health professionals globally. They practice in diverse settings including rural contexts. The contribution that rural nurses and midwives make to rural communities will be highlighted in the Special Issue of the journal. Advancing and sustaining the rural nursing and midwifery workforce, evolving scope of practice, chronicity, ageing, palliative and end of life care, collaborative and novel partnerships to achieve positive health outcomes, vulnerable populations, rural workplace and farm injury are topics that contributors may consider.
