The New World(s) as Experienced by Early Modern Spanish Women Writers

Dear Colleagues,

The arrival of the Spanish in the Americas and in the Philippines prompted an abundant body of writings which, together, offer a picture of the ways in which these territories were experienced or envisioned by their authors. To date, there have been many studies dedicated to Spanish historical writing about the Indies produced by men, and courses devoted to Spanish colonial literature tend to focus primarily on these texts. On the contrary, documents composed by women have garnered scant scholarly attention. There are, however, female accounts of life and society in the newly seized territories. Snippets of female experiences and views of America and the Philippines can be found, for instance, in correspondence and in diverse documents produced by Spanish women who traveled to lands far away from home. The aim of this Special Issue of Humanities is to explore early modern female representations of the ‘new’ worlds encountered by the Spanish in order to rescue them from the oblivion into which they have fallen. The term ‘writers’ is used here in its broadest sense to allow for contributions dealing with recognized female authors as well as with lesser known names. The possibilities are open as far as theoretical approaches to their work.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Humanities is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
