Interests: Genetic and epigenetic mechanisms as potential functional pathways linking exposures to environmental and occupational pollutants to human multifactorial chronic age-related disease, including cancer. More recently my research interest is moved on exploring new biological molecular aging processes, among these telomere shortening, mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic age (DNA methylation analysis) to determine the real biological age of an individual.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The aging of the population, also called the "gray" revolution, is a social and public health problem emerging also in the workplace. The increase in life expectancy has involved, and will entail, a longer stay in the working world, so much that in most industrialized countries the workforce is struggling with the "Silver Tsunami". Aging is associated with the onset of chronic diseases with a negative impact on the "employability" of "elderly" workers. The impact of the phenomenon is preannounced by alarming dimensions in Italy, as amongst the oldest countries of the world, seen especially in the northeast Veneto region. The study of the aging process and its determinants will consent to intervene on this phenomenon with more tailored prevention actions. Being able to intervene on this phenomenon, at a multidisciplinary level, would promote greater well-being, alongside also reducing the social costs related to it.

Aging is an individual, natural, inexorable and biologically complex process during which a decrease in the body’s ability progressively appears to respond appropriately to internal and/or external stressors. However, some individuals have a more rapid physiological senescence than others. In particular, impaired regulatory systems leading to systemic inflammation, and excessive stress responsivity, are related to biological aging and involved in pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. In addition, recent studies reveal that biological aging is a reversible phenomenon. Chronological age therefore may not be a reliable indicator of the body’s rate of physiological decline. Quantifying the aging process and defining measurable estimates of ‘biological aging’ may (1) help identify drivers of the aging or better those that slow the aging process, (2) facilitate identification of at-risk individuals earlier in the life course, and (3) help to assess the efficacy of interventions aimed at slowing aging and extending health span.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
