Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on sexual health promotion interventions delivered digitally, inclusive of m-health (apps and text-message interventions), internet-based, and “offline” digital interventions.

Sexual health is a global public health concern, and is fundamental to well-being. There is growing evidence for the effectiveness of digital interventions in this health area, and they offer potential advantages. For instance, they may be delivered to large numbers of people, may enable users to engage with sensitive content in private and at their own pace, and content may be tailored based on individuals’ characteristics and behaviors. With the expansion of digital technologies, the potential reach of digital health promotion interventions has grown, although inequalities remain in internet and technology access, as well as in digital literacy skills.

Manuscripts may focus on any area of sexual health promotion (using a holistic definition of “sexual health”, e.g., the WHO working definition: https://www.who.int/teams/sexual-and-reproductive-health-and-research/key-areas-of-work/sexual-health/defining-sexual-health). Digital health promotion interventions may be deployed in any setting, including healthcare settings (although online/digital provision of clinical care is out of scope). Interventions can be for the general population or for minority and underserved groups, in any country/region globally. Novel ways of engaging so-called “hard-to-reach” groups are of interest, as well as research that takes a critical view of digital inclusion/exclusion. We welcome trials, evaluations, and implementation research, including research exploring contexts and mechanisms of action. Original empirical research (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods) and high-quality research syntheses will be considered.
