Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The incidence and prevalence of cancer in lung or pleura are both increasing due to prolonged life expectancy, early screening, and treatment success. The need for minimally invasive procedures in diagnosis, staging and treatment of thoracic cancer is therefore increasing. In this Special Issue, we present the variety of procedures used in respiratory medicine currently and likely in the near future.

This comprehensive collection of state-of-the-art papers will inspire future pulmonologists and serve as a catalogue of invasive skills needed in the diagnosis and care of patients with suspected or manifest thoracic malignancy. Topics covered are precision-based diagnosis and staging as basis for treatment decision, bronchoscopic procedures, endosonography (endobronchial ultrasound, esophageal ultrasound), thoracic ultrasound, imaging-guided biopsies from lung or pleura by ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy, thoracentesis, and thoracoscopy as well as procedures of the near future.

This Special Issue will be organized as easily accessible chapters using the same structure (history, indication, preparation, diagnostic yield, side effects and with many pictures) to achieve optimal learning.
