Special Issue "Iron and Folate in Women’s Health"
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 30 September 2021.
Iron and folic acid deficiency is common among young women. The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 30% of women of reproductive age worldwide are anemic and that at least half of these have iron-deficiency anemia. The most detrimental effects of IDA are immunological and neurological disorders, the impairment of thermoregulation, cognitive dysfunction, fatigue, and the inhibition of psychomotor development. Folate deficiency leads to impaired DNA synthesis, megaloblastic anemia, and neural tube defects.
The main reason for iron and folate deficiency is chronic iron depletion during the menstrual cycle and accompanying iron and folic acid malnutrition. Iron and folic acid supplementation is therefore recommended as a public health intervention in menstruating and pregnant women. It is worth highlighting that the iron and folate status depends on the process of absorption and factors that affect the bioavailability of these micronutrients. Interactions between iron and folic acid and also between them and other nutritional and environmental factors play an important role in the effectiveness of iron and folic acid supplementation and influence their metabolism.
