Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last two decades, a new era with molecular targeted therapies has been launched in the battle against cancer.

In these two decades, a great contribution to the comprehension of cancer has been provided by the myriads of elucidated pathological molecular pathways. Many of them were and will be the basis for the design of novel drugs and the stimulation of further investigations. Furthermore, these advances in molecular biology were the platform for genetic and epigenetic studies to better understand the origin of the discovered molecular alterations and contributed to unravelling the complexity of cancer in its advanced stages.

However, to date, the expectated therapeutic advances have not always been made. In fact, while many of the novel drugs have entered into clinical practice, the benefit in terms of improved OS, when it occurs, has been marginal in most but a minority of patients with the common types of advanced cancer.

To overcome this deadlock, in addition to focusing on single or few molecular pathways, it is urgent to look at the entire complexity of the system in its advanced stage. In addition to some interesting contributions on cancer diagnostic methods, this Special Issue will provide a space for new therapeutic strategies based on a robust rationale from basic research, capable of examining the entire complexity of the system.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Osteosarcoma is known to be one of the frequently occurring cancers in dogs. Its prognosis is usually very poor, with a high incidence of lung metastasis. Although radiation therapy has become a major therapeutic choice for canine osteosarcoma, the high costs and unexpected side effects prevent some patients from considering this treatment. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is an ionized gas with high energy at low temperatures, and it produces reactive oxygen species that mediate many signaling pathways. Although many researchers have used CAP as an anticancer therapeutic approach in humans, its importance has been neglected in veterinary medicine. In this study, D-17 and DSN canine osteosarcoma cell lines were treated with CAP to observe its anticancer activity. By high-content screening and flow cytometry, CAP-treated cells showed growth arrest and apoptosis induction. Moreover, the osteosarcoma cells exhibited reduced migration and invasion activity when treated with CAP. Overall, CAP exerted an anticancer effect on canine osteosarcoma cell lines. CAP may have the potential to be used as a novel modality for treating cancer in veterinary medicine. Full article
