Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

At present, multimedia technologies play a crucial role in the valorization and realization of cultural heritage. In such a crucial period of human history, with billions of people forced to remain at home due to the diffusion of COVID-19, virtual museums and interactive technologies represent the only way for people to remotely visit museums, cultural sites, or even entire historic centers. For this reason, research in the field of digital heritage is ongoing to develop novel immersive solutions in virtual reality, mixed reality, digital storytelling, and web technologies in general in order to provide realistic experiences to people willing to remotely enjoy a virtual tour of a specific cultural site.

Moreover, when speaking of cultural heritage, both tangible sites and intangible phenomena have to be taken into account. According to UNESCO, intangible cultural heritage encompasses oral traditions and expressions, languages, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, and knowledges and practices concerning nature and the universe. Due to the peculiar, immaterial nature of these assets, multimedia technologies may represent the ideal way to allow citizens to experience these complex cultural phenomena by means of immersive applications and exploiting their mobile devices.

This Special Issue invites the submission of original research articles on topics related to multimedia technologies and tools for the realization of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • web-based solutions for cultural heritage;
  • virtual museums;
  • visualization techniques in cultural heritage;
  • virtual and augmented reality in cultural heritage;
  • virtual reality in archaeology and historical research;
  • mobile solutions for the valorization of cultural heritage;
  • interactive applications for cultural heritage;
  • analysis of user experience;
  • 3D reconstructions of cultural sites;
  • storytelling and gaming in cultural heritage;
  • tools for education, documentation, and training in cultural heritage; and
  • mobile and wireless solutions for intangible cultural heritage.
