Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Travel experiences are generated by visited places, people met, and memories created by travellers, especially those related to landscapes, atmosphere, altitude, colour, ambience, tastings, smells, touches, listening or participating in a different lifestyle than usual. In this context, we consider that tourist destinations face the challenge of developing new combinations of places and products that are unique, attractive, and highly competitive for niche markets or for those with special interests, who want specific experiences. Visitors do not want to be mere observers. They prefer to be as active as possible and to be involved in the culture of the tourist destination, to know and feel, experiencing creative activities, smelling or tasting, immortalising or making movies, painting or acting as local artists. Destinations that have a competitive advantage and continuously create superior value are those that offer memorable experiences to the guests. As the modern consumer seeks new ways of being and new emotions to explore, their requests focus on cultural events and experiences, which lead to profound changes in innovative policies for managing tourist resources.

Today, the global society is more and more attracted by the authentic and the natural. People become interested in ecology and environment protection and focus on health issues. This change is based on the fact that modern consumers—who have gone through the universal fight against viruses—tend to prefer organisations that can implement healthy business models and strategies and that promote and ensure the safety and health governance. In the competition for the attention and trust of consumers, companies have started to base their approach on the exploitation of local resources and products, as authentic brands and services generate new jobs and welfare. In this context, the businesses in tourism also solve social problems, correct inequalities, and allow new knowledge transfers, satisfying curiosities and trying to strengthen loyalty or facilitate free promotion of less known areas by the tourists. From this perspective, the tourism of the future can become a tool for capitalising on local resources, of any kind. In this way, it can customise the offer of local communities through activities, actions, and strategies of local organisations that are dedicated to promoting the “health” of the environment and establishing the specific nature of the area and the behaviour, attitude, lifestyle, and motivation of host community members.

The objective of this Special Issue is to capture the latest development regarding the use of tourism as an element of local development in terms of enhancing natural and anthropogenic potential and promoting tangible and intangible heritage available in tourist destinations. It is also true that this requires the involvement of modern organisations, innovation tools, and trend forecasting. Moreover, a permanent control management over preserving the authenticity and uniqueness of each tourist destination is also needed.

Topics of interest for publication in this Special Issue include but are not limited to the following:

  • Innovation and competitiveness in tourism;

  • Awareness of the use of local resources and orientation towards research and development;

  • Local/regional/national tourism and social responsibility;

  • Sustainable capitalisation of local resources through tourism and through sustainable organisations that act in local communities;

  • Marketing local artisanal or gastronomic resources by including local tourist products;
  • Tourism marketing in the educational environment: consequences of educating the young generation through teaching and research;

The present article includes descriptive research about how water resources in Romanian medical spas could be better promoted to increase their visibility. Romania is one of the European countries with impressive potential in terms of balneology, having a wide diversity of natural factors that allow treating several medical conditions in the same resort. In addition, one-third of the mineral and thermal water springs in Europe are present on the Romanian territory, making Romania one of the most important European destinations in terms of natural spa resources. The present research aims to illustrate how the Romanian medical spas communicate with tourists about the therapeutic water available in five medical spas: Băile Felix-1 Mai, Techirghiol, Băile Tușnad, Sovata and Covasna, having as its main objective to raise the awareness among the spas representatives regarding the necessity of water management implementation. The research is based on primary data obtained from the official websites of the resorts included in the study and in the published scholarly articles that approached the Romanian medical spas. The paper sheds a light on the interconnections between touristic sector development and regional development in Kazakhstan. The paper covers analysis of the current competitiveness of the touristic destinations in Kazakhstan. Based on qualitative and quantitative research, the study shows that there is a huge need for a transformation in marketing communications tools in order to increase the competitiveness and image of Kazakhstani tourism. The study provides potential scenarios and solutions to increase touristic attractiveness, which would lead to enticing more investors and increase tourism capacity and potential. Also, the paper provides insights in ecotourism and the regional economy by outlining the older and newer managerial and governmental approaches in supporting the entire tourism sector in Kazakhstan. The present paper examines the evolution of Romanian seaside tourism between 2008–2018 to find the connection between climate change and the number of total tourist arrivals. The vicious cycle of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change has become one of the most critical topics discussed due to its negative effect on the wellbeing of the planet and its impact on sustainable economic development in the long run. Various economic activities, including tourism, could be subject to dramatic changes due to global warming. Depending on the geographical location of tourist destinations, and the degree of fluctuation in climate indicators, there have been dramatic shifts in visitor flow. This situation has been aggravated as countries that were once famous for their summer season and seaside holidays are now affected by high temperatures. Such temperatures can hardly be tolerated by tourists, particularly those from the Nordic countries. By comparison, there are countries that have been known to have only two or three full summer months suitable for tourism at the seaside and which in the last years have had a more extended summer season. This situation could turn into a significant competitive regional economic advantage for countries such as Romania, at least in the short- and medium-term. In this context, we aim to investigate whether there are climatic conditions, such as the extension of the tourist season on the coast (in the case of destinations that have four seasons and are known for having a shorter number of summer days), that can be turned into advantages. In this regard, we have conducted exploratory research to analyse if there is a statistically significant correlation between the indicators regarding climate change and tourism arrivals on the Romanian seaside, namely Constanta county. For our study, we used secondary data, provided by the Romanian National Meteorological Administration and the National Institute of Statistics, and accumulated a detailed profile of Romanian seaside summer tourism in the context of actual climate changes and challenges. Climate change may have significant consequences on the tourism industry and economic growth as well. Information on the direct effects higher temperatures could have on tourism is lacking. Improving policy analysis is necessary to reduce uncertainties, further understanding, assess implications and enable the tourism industry to adapt to changing circumstances. Full article

As a country, Romania tries to communicate abroad its authenticity, intact nature and unique cultural heritage. This message matches perfectly the main attributes associated to Rodna Mountains National Park, as it is the second national park in Romanian. The aim of the research is to identify and analyze the prospects for sustainable development of rural tourism in the area of Rodna Mountains National Park, taking into account its impact on the social and economic life of the inhabitants of the Rodna commune, but also factors that may positively or negatively influence the whole process. From a methodological perspective, quantitative methods were used; a survey-based research was carried out among Romanian mountain tourists, aiming at identifying and analyzing their opinions and suggestions regarding tourism in protected areas in Romania, as well as the impact of the tourist flows generated by the Park upon the surrounding communities. Rodna Mountains National Park seems to be among the favorite destinations of tourists, as the respondents have a good and very good general impression about the interaction with the mountain and protected areas, prefer internal to external destinations regardless of the season, budgets allocated per night, per stay and annually are quite high, so the purchasing power is also high; they constitute a solid foundation for the decisions of the tourist development of the area. The need for holidays and the savings that tourists make throughout the year to go on vacation, regardless of income level, give viability to this opportunity. Other results of this research are related to the problems tourists helped to identify and the solutions they proposed. Full article

This study investigates safety and security from the perspective of Romanian tourists by assessing the level of importance that tourists give to safety and security depending on the level of classification of the services they experienced and the generation to which they belong. We used a quantitative research method in the form of a questionnaire and analysed eight dimensions of safety and security: detectors, emergency preparedness, medical preparedness, staff security, guestroom security, pool and beach security, hotel access control, and cyber security. We identified the differences between tourists’ perception of safety and security depending on the level of classification of accommodation services and on generation. Full article

The destination image is a complex construction in which the different sources of information consulted are decisive. Among these information sources, we can find films, which have a relevant function to create destination images. Films are one of the factors that most influences people in their motivation to travel to a destination. The academic literature on film tourism has grown considerably in recent years, but an updated revision is needed. Due to this fact, the main contribution of this paper is the proposal of an updated review of the academic literature focused on film tourism and destinations and their management implications. The general objective of this research is to analyse the existing literature, systematising the relationships that exist between films, film tourism, destination image, and tourist destination. To this end, a systematic review of the literature has been carried out, with two aims: on the one hand, a review of the existing literature from a descriptive perspective, showing the main publications, authors and topics, and on the other hand, a review from a thematic perspective. The results of the latter will be addressed in the discussion and conclusions. The results of the descriptive analysis highlight the significant growth in the literature analysed over the last 45 years, especially between 2005 and 2015. They also underline that the most studied topics are film destinations, marketing and destination image. The results of the thematic analysis highlight the importance of films and series as important information sources on the creation of destination images. The thematic analysis also provides information on the negative and positive aspects of film destination management. Full article
