Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, there has been a widespread diffusion of novel visual data representations, such as high dynamic range content (HDR), multi-spectral images, depth maps, light fields, and many others. These representations are typically associated with a large amount of data, which require efficient compression strategies for their practical exploitation. Furthermore, even if they can be typically represented as standard images and processed with image coding solutions, most of these compression tools have been developed and optimized for standard photographic content and do not provide optimal performances on these new kinds of data. As a matter of fact, a significant research effort has been devoted, in these last few years, to the investigation of effective ad-hoc coding solutions, although massive scientific investigation is still going on. This Special Issue aims to provide a collection of high quality research articles that address broad challenges on both theoretical and application aspects in novel image representations compression.

The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Compression of HDR, multi-spectral and hyper-spectral data
  • Compression of static and dynamic 3D imaging representations like multi-view images, depth maps, point clouds, meshes, light fields, and holograms.
  • Compression of CT scan, MRI, X-ray images and volumes
  • Compression of thermal and radar images
  • Compression of 360° images and videos for immersive applications
  • Storage of distributed archives of images/videos
  • Lossy and lossless approaches for non-standard images compression
  • Scalable image compression strategies
  • The emerging image coding standards JPEG XT and JPEG Pleno
  • Joint compression of heterogeneous image representations (e.g., joint compression of images and 3D data)
  • Interactive streaming and transmission of images and related data

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Imaging is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
