Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Road surface performance has been studied extensively from the standpoint of skid resistance, rolling resistance, and rolling noise. Progress has been made in terms of users’ safety, reduction in fuel consumption and nuisance, and preservation of materials’ resources, yet climate- and energy-related needs as well as emerging alternative transport modes, such as autonomous vehicles or soft modes—walking, cycling—require greater progress to develop products (materials, measuring devices, predictive tools, etc.) adapted to new challenges.

To achieve this aim, there is a need to know where we are, mainly the remaining scientific and technical obstacles, and how can we go further in terms of understanding of phenomena, testing, and modeling. It is also desirable to see how knowledge from other fields—such as machine learning techniques or triboelectricity—could contribute to this progress.

Your experiences will be very valuable for people involved in the field of roads, airfields, and guided transports. Having all these outstanding works gathered in a Special Issue would help readers to go rapidly through past and current experiences and find useful information for the future. You are kindly invited to submit research works or topical reviews on the evaluation of road surface performances. Performances include not only the three widely cited properties (skid resistance, rolling resistance, rolling noise) but also connected aspects such as cracking or emission of non-exhaust particles due to wear. Papers can deal with laboratory tests or field experiments, development of methodologies or devices, data analysis, theory and modeling, etc. Exploratory works on the application of new technologies or techniques are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
