Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Amorphous alloys are special materials without long-range order and with high strength, and often exhibit higher ductility than covalent glasses due to their versatile metallic bonds. These alloys came into the focus of materials research because their ductility at ambient temperature screened by a plastic instability process, which leads to fracture via formation of intense shear bands. Deformation methods with mechanical constraints, including nanoindentation, bending, torsion, or high-pressure torsion (HPT), reveal inherent plasticity and highlight the role of internal stresses and atomic rearrangements in shear-band formation. Measuring or predicting internal stresses and related atomic processes in amorphous structures are still not a routine procedure. At the same time, deformation-controlled defect formation in amorphous alloys has potentially many significant advantages over traditional thermal treatments providing special microstructural features, such as ductile glasses, low temperature H-storage, and sharp nanofeatures.

In this Special Issue, both experimental and theoretical results on deformation-induced behaviour in various amorphous alloys and metallic glasses are targeted. Especially, works discussing shear banding, deformation-induced structural changes, internal stresses, and related atomic processes are highlighted.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
