Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is well known that tribology is the science dealing with friction, lubrication, and wear. It is actually an interdisciplinary topic that is deeply connected with other scientific disciplines.

At the same time, however, applied tribology is a research field whose applicability in industry is nowadays extremely wide and that has close links with industrial maintenance.

Industrial maintenance is the science that deals with maintaining or restoring the functions of industrial systems. In fact, maintenance seeks to remove the effects of friction and wear on industrial systems and to find lubrication systems and lubricants that can contribute to this goal.

The purpose of this SI is to contribute to the understanding of wear mechanisms in industrial systems in order to prevent and reduce it and improve lubrication systems.

We also wish to identify maintenance management systems that take into account tribological aspects, in all their complexity, in the context of the transition to Industry 4.0.

The deep groove ball bearing is one of the most important components of the rotary motion system and is the research subject in this paper. After factory assembly, new ball bearings need to pass quality control. The conventional approach relies on measuring the vibration amplitudes for each unit and sorting them into classes according to the vibration level. In this paper, based on experimental research, models are created to predict the vibration class and analyze the dynamic behavior of new ball bearings. The models are based on artificial neural networks. A feedforward multilayer perceptron (MLP) was applied, and a backpropagation learning algorithm was used. A specific method of training groups of artificial neural networks was applied, where each network provided an answer to the input within the group, and the final answer was the mean value of the answers of all networks in the group. The models achieved a prediction accuracy of over 90%. The main aim of the research was to construct models that are able to predict the vibration class of a new ball bearing based on the geometric parameters of the bearing rings. The models are also applied to analyze the influence of surface roughness of the raceways and the internal radial clearance on bearing vibrations. Full article

The aim of the study is the tribological analysis of the crane drum brakes. A theoretical analysis of the wear processes for brake lining was performed and the coefficient of friction under tribological conditions was determined experimentally simulating the operating conditions for three types of brakes. The theoretical study of the wear was oriented towards of determining the lifetime of the brake lining. In the experimental determination of the coefficient of friction, the following parameters were taken into account: the contact pressure between the shoe and the drum; the initial speed of the brake drum; the humidity of the working environment; and the temperature of the drum-brake lining friction surfaces. After performing the experiments, a statistical analysis was conducted, that shows the amount the coefficient of friction is influenced by the previously mentioned parameters: the highest weight was humidity with a value of 35.58%, followed by temperature with a percentage of 23.95%, velocity with 4.54%, and lastly pressure with 4.19%. Furthermore, the equation that expresses the dependence between the coefficient of friction and the parameters is determined. We consider that the results obtained are important for brake manufacturers in order to improve braking efficiency and the safety of overhead cranes. Full article
