Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Titanium-based composites were developed to increase the modulus of elasticity, wear resistance, heat resistance, and oxidation stability of titanium and its alloys. These materials are lightweight and have high specific strength, excellent chemical resistance, and excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, they are an ideal candidate for structural, chemical, petrochemical, marine, and biomedical applications. In the past two decades, new technologies have been developed for the creation of titanium-matrix-based composites. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are commonly used now in this field to produce net shape goods from titanium composites. Another example is a possibility to use concentrated solar power in titanium composites production to decrease carbon footprint. Therefore, this Special Issue is primarily devoted to the brand new technologies of titanium-based composite preparation.

New technologies enable to prepare various new microstructures, thus significantly influencing physical, mechanical, and wear properties of titanium-based composites. Therefore, this Special Issue is also devoted to the determination of these properties and investigation of the microstructure and microstructure–property relationships. Finally, the investigation of the lifetime of prepared composites, various types of surface tretment, their interaction with surrounding environment, corrosion, wear and heat resistance, biocompatibility, their behavior under extreme environment or forces, and radiation or vacuum are of interest to this Special Issue.

The ever-expanding appetite of humans for a high strength-to-weight ratio of structural parts involved in military, aerospace or automotive applications in order to cut down fuel costs is continually feeding the research and development of titanium-matrix-based composites, and it is expected that this trend will remain the same in the near future.

It is my pleasure to invite you to submit a manuscript with your research results in this subject to this Special Issue. Full papers, short communications, and reviews are all welcome.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
