Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The possibility of generating directed transport from a fluctuating environment without any net external force, the ratchet effect, has been a major research topic in distinct areas of science over recent decades. The reasons are its potential applications for understanding such systems such as molecular motors, coupled Josephson junctions, and protein translocation processes, among many others, and its wide range of potential technological applications including the design of micro- and nano-devices suitable for on-chip implementation. Directed ratchet transport is now understood qualitatively to be a result of the interplay of nonlinearity, symmetry breaking, and nonequilibrium fluctuations including temporal noise, spatial disorder, and quenched temporal disorder.

This Special Issue will gather the latest developments in the theory of ratchets, including mathematical and numerical approaches.
