Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. The key risk factors for the development of OA are age, obesity, joint trauma, and instability. There is increasing emphasis on the early detection of OA, as it has the capacity to target and treat the disease more effectively. However, the development of strategies for the prevention of OA requires new and sensitive biomarker tools that can detect the disease in its molecular and pre-radiographic stage, before structural and functional alterations in cartilage integrity have occurred. There is also evidence to support a role for biomarkers in OA drug discovery, specifically, the development of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs. This Special Issue of Medicina is dedicated to recent progress in the field of OA biomarkers and aims to cover recent advances in identifying and validating new OA biomarkers using high throughput omics technologies that enable deep phenotyping in OA and to learn more about early events in the pathogenesis of the disease.

What is a biomarker? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomarkers Definitions Working Group defines a biomarker as “a characteristic, i.e. objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention” (Biomarkers Definitions Working Group, 2001). In essence, biomarkers help healthcare professionals to diagnose illness, measure its progress, and check how effectively novel or pre-existing treatments work. Important biomarkers include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Biomarkers that help us to diagnose illness;
  • Biomarkers that help us to predict illness;
  • Biomarkers that allow us to assess a patient’s physical condition;
  • Biomarkers that allow us to monitor disease progression;
  • Biomarkers that allow drug companies to assess the efficacy of new drugs.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together current research in the field of osteoarthritis biomarkers.

We welcome basic, translational, and clinical studies focusing on osteoarthritis biomarkers. Work that describes biomarker identification, characterisation, validation, and qualification is suitable for this Special Issue.

This journal accepts all forms of manuscripts, including original research articles, review articles, mini review articles, systematic reviews, and perspectives.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
