Understanding, Assessing and Preventing Suicidal Behavior

Dear Colleagues,

Suicide represents one of the most complex human behaviors. There are many scientific data already available that highlight the importance of specific risk factors of suicidality, but how the specific circumstances will play out in individual cases is difficult to predict. Moreover, the interplay of the individual, interpersonal, community-related and social factors is challenging to capture. This is even more true when we think about specific populations that are more vulnerable. Besides, despite relying on widely used clinical scales, science needs to pay more attention to making the assessment of suicidal behavior and suicide-related bereavement processes more credible and reliable. The value of good assessment tools is particularly important to analyze effectiveness of preventive or postventive interventions.

We therefore invite scholars who are trying to understand and explain suicidal behavior with qualitive and quantitative research designs to contribute to this Special Issue. We are interested in a broad area of research, aiming at the assessment of risk and protective factors, and evaluation of preventive and postventive measures. Submissions from all disciplines will be considered, and both original research as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the topic are welcomed.
