Dear Colleagues,
Magnesium is an essential micronutrient in health and exercise performance. Critical care patients are a population at risk of magnesium deficiency as they can have strong nutritional deficiencies and increased losses (sweat, diarrhea, increased urinary loss); a number of medications may also cause low magnesium, including proton pump inhibitors and furosemide. Hypomagnesemia is associated with higher mortality, the need for mechanical ventilation, and also a greater length of stay for patients admitted to ICU. Ionized magnesium is the active form of total magnesium, and its value might be even more important than total magnesium. Whether ionized magnesium is influenced by perioperative changes remains unclear.
The main objectives of this Medicina Special Issue are:
- To investigate the epidemiology of hypo/hypermagnesemia and the relationship with ionized magnesium in critical care patients;
- To understand ionized magnesium concentration changes after surgery;
To verify if measuring ionized Mg during hospital stay could be advantageous for preventing cardiac complications.
