Dear Colleagues,
Assessment of dietary exposure has relied on self-reported measures of intake derived using tools such as food frequency questionnaires, dietary recall, and diet diaries. However, these methods have limitations as a result of misreporting and bias and depend upon food composition tables for estimation of intakes of energy, nutrients, and other food constituents. Metabolites derived from specific foods or food groups present in human biofluids such as urine and blood samples may provide biomarkers of dietary exposure. Metabolomic-based approaches have led to the discovery of dietary biomarkers for several foods; however, further valuation is required in real-world environments. Performance of single and panels of markers in real-life situations needs to be demonstrated, including after consumption of complex meals, co-consumption with other foods, and when using different food preparation, processing, and cooking methods.
Manuscripts that address food exposure biomarker discovery, development, and validation, as well as data-driven, metabolomic modelling approaches are highly desired. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advances and utility of metabolomic technologies in dietary assessment;
- Novel biomarkers of dietary exposure;
- Validation and utility of dietary biomarkers in real-life situations;
- Data-driven, metabolomic modelling approaches for biomarker discovery and utilisation.
