Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that our Special Issue for MDPI Micromachines, focused on Micromachine Intelligence (μ-AI), is now open for submissions.

Machine intelligence, also called artificial intelligence (AI), is becoming a hot and significant topic in many engineering fields. Micromachine intelligence is artificial intelligence demonstrated by micromachines that can accomplish specific tasks autonomously and adapt to dynamic microenvironments. To face complexity, uncertainty, and variability from interactions with itself, micromachine peers, humans, and the environment, an intelligent micromachine requires the capabilities to not only take actions by mechanisms but also to perceive, process, and respond to information by sensors, actuators, and controllers with feedback loops and AI algorithms. However, at small scales, how to create intelligence for machines is not trivial, because the size of micromachines that are normally smaller than 1 mm probably go beyond the minimal size where machine intelligence can be realized by integrating programmable microchips. Considering the current researches in the field towards intelligentization of micromachines, such as shape-morphing micromachines, encodable micromachines, integrated micromachines, swarm micromachines, etc., I highly recommend opening a Special Issue on Micromachine Intelligence (μ-AI), to promote the development of micromachines towards the μ-AI.

This Special Issue will report advances in the development of intelligent micromachines, focusing on the cutting-edge techniques and innovative methods on how to create intelligence for machines at small scales. The scope includes, but is not restricted to, micromachine intelligence (μ-AI), intelligent micromachines, smart micro/nanorobots, swarm microrobots, 4D microprinting, smart microsensors and microactuators, reconfigurable micromachines, bioinspired and biohybrid micromachines, encodable micromachines, self-assembling micromachines, integrated micromachines, human-micromachine interface (μ-HMI), etc.

We look forward to receiving your submissions!

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
