17 June 2021 Molecules Webinar | Synthesis and Identification of Small Compounds Active in Neurodegeneration

Online

Neurodegenerative diseases of the nervous system impose substantial medical and public health burdens on populations throughout the world. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis are three of the major neurodegenerative diseases with increasing incidence worldwide, associated with the ageing of the population. Several pathological hallmarks have been widely recognized as causes of the loss of specific neurons , including the misfolding and deposition of proteins, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Despite increasing awareness and significant research advancements, leading to treatment options that provide a significantly increased quality of life and life expectancy, a delay in the progression of disease and a reduction in symptoms, the development of efficacious therapies has not yet been achieved in this field.
Better elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases can provide an important theoretical basis for the discovery of new and effective strategies for symptomatic treatment. Currently, the development of drugs for the treatment of neurological diseases is limited by the complex challenges posed by the blood–brain barrier, which make it difficult to transport drugs to the brain tissue. Nanosized drug delivery systems are specifically engineered to shuttle drugs across the blood–brain barrier. Moreover, the development of multi-target therapeutics has become an important approach that is widely used in the research in this area, envisaging simultaneous interaction with several pathological targets.

This webinar aims to explore new mechanisms that can serve as targets of therapeutic interventions, as well as some pharmaceutical and pharmacological aspects of neurodegenerative management.

The following experts will be present and talk:

  • Dr. Barbara De Filippis, University of Chieti, Italy
  • Prof. Dr. Carlo Ballatore, University of California San Diego (UCSD), United States
  • Prof. Dr. Richard B. Silverman, Northwestern University, United States
  • Prof. Dr. Maria João Matos, University of Porto, Portugal, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain

23 June 2021 Molecules Webinar | Recent Advances in Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes

Online

The area of carbohydrate-active enzymes belongs to one of the most enormously developed research fields, which, in recent decades, has attracted continuously increasing attention from the scientific community. Since the early 1990s, the field has been tightly connected with the sequence-based classification of glycoside hydrolases (GHs) into GH families, established by Bernard Henrissat in 1991, and later involving other enzyme activities that, in addition to catalyzing the hydrolysis of glycoside linkages, can also catalyze the formation and/or modification of a variety of carbohydrates. Therefore, carbohydrate-active enzymes are currently best recognized as being classified in the CAZy database (http://www.cazy.org/), covering, in addition to GH families, the families of glycosyltransferases (GTs), polysaccharide lyases (PLs), carbohydrate esterases (CEs), and auxiliary activities (AAs). Also covered is a segment devoted to the non-catalytic domains of the so-called carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) families. The scope of “CAZymes” is therefore rather wide, spanning from basic research to many practical applications, such as modern biotechnologies and state-of-the-art approaches in medicine.

The following experts will be present and talk:

  • Dr. Stefan Janecek, Laboratory of Protein Evolution, Institute of Molecular Biology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Dr. Nicolas Terrapon, Aix Marseille Université, Marseille, France
  • Dr. Elizabeth Ficko-Blean, CNRS and Sorbonne Université, Station Biologique de Roscoff, Roscoff, France

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 3rd International Conference on Food Bioactives & Health, that will be held on June 21-24, 2022 in the amazing city of Parma, Italy. This third conference in the series comes after the great success of the previous meetings, held in Norwich in 2016 and in Lisbon in 2018. Both events were very well organized and were a great success. We are, therefore, committed to match these standards and are preparing what we are sure will be a unique event. The topics addressed by FBHC2020 have been broadened to cover a wide range of topics on food bioactives and health, including (poly)phenols, carotenoids, glucosinolates & other organosulfur compounds, fatty acids & sterols, polysaccharides, and peptides & protein. In addition, a session will be devoted to toxic compounds, an often overlooked topic that is important from a holistic perspective in the role of food bioactives and their impact on human health. Particular attention will be paid on transversal topics such as personalised nutrition, gut microbiota, dietary intake, and nutritional policy. The Conference aims to offer plenty of networking opportunities, providing the chance to interact with renowned scientists and to stimulate creative exchange among researchers. Young scientists will have a lot of opportunities to showcase their work and obtain feedback from experienced international scientist. June is a perfect time to visit Parma, a lively and cultural city, located in Northern Italy, that is surrounded by parks, vineyards, lakes and medieval castles. Most importantly, Parma is a “food city”. It has been recognised as UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and hosts the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) headquarters. The congress year, 2020, will be a great time to visit Parma as it will be the Italian Capital of Culture and full of numerous special attractions. In addition, we are planning a “family friendly conference”, with organized activities for the children of delegates during the sessions, including "learning through playing” games focusing on healthy nutrition and lifestyle. We hope you will participate in what will be a memorable conference in the beautiful city of Parma!

With best wishes,

The Organizing Committee.
