Molecules Webinar | Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) — Synthesis, Functionalization, Applications

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) combine the features of inorganic and organic matter as they are composed of an inorganic -Si-O- core cage, and various organic groups that can be attached to the Si atoms. Notably, with an appropriate functionalization of the vertex groups, POSS can be applied as precursors in the synthesis of new nanomaterials or be incorporated in the organic polymer matrix as a reactive or inert filler. In that respect, functionalized POSS may serve as unique nanobuilding blocks in the synthesis of novel hybrid materials with improved characteristics over the traditional composites.
In recent years, functionalizations of POSS molecules and their incorporation into polymeric matrices have paved new ways for reinforced engineering composites, flame-retardant fillers or tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery systems. During this Webinar, POSS synthesis and functionalisation routes will be presented, and there will be a discussion on the glass transition in POSS containing polymers and on the effects of silsesquioxane structure on the polymeric matrix.
