Dear Colleagues,
Raman spectroscopy is an emerging analytical technique that is broadly utilized in numerous research areas ranging from forensics and food sciences to material science and clinical biochemistry. This is primarily because Raman spectroscopy can be used for non-invasive, non-destructive, label-free analysis of the chemical structure and composition of analyzed samples. Recently developed hand-held spectrometers further enhance the potential of Raman spectroscopy, allowing for spectroscopic analysis directly in the field or at a crime scene.
This issue aims to attract the attention of researchers to the growing potential of Raman spectroscopy in Biochemistry and Biophysics. During the past decade, Raman spectroscopy has been used to identify biological systems, probe their metabolism and physiologically important changes on the cell and tissue levels. Although these findings are exciting, they barely scratch the surface of the actual potential of Raman spectroscopy in biochemistry and biophysics. This issue will be focused on, but not limited to, the use of Raman spectroscopy in (i) determination of structural transformations in living systems; (ii) probing cell and tissue metabolism; (iii) nanoscale imaging of biological specimens.
