Dear Colleagues,
Solar-driven water electrolysis has the potential to produce hydrogen gas that is both cost-effective and can serve as a feedstock for the production of zero-emission transportation fuels. The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking program (FCH-JU) has identified photoelectrochemical water splitting technology as one of the six green pathways for hydrogen gas production to be further developed in the coming decades. Moreover, recent technoeconomic insights based on learning curves predict that PEC H2 production has a high risk/high gain character, and the optimistic scenario reveals that PEC water electrolysis will already be able to meet the current cost of H2 in the beginning of 2030.
Therefore, this Special Issue focuses on recent advances towards PEC H2 production, and we invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles related (but not limited) to the following potential topics:
- Advanced (nano)materials in PEC H2 production cells;
- Novel processes for PEC H2 production;
- ‘’Buried’’ PV junction in PEC systems;
- Hybrid bio-inorganic interfaces for PEC water electrolysis: Mimicking natural photosynthetic systems for H2
