Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is truly a great pleasure to organize a Special Issue on protein–protein interactions (PPIs). This is an important and timely topic that has opened up new opportunities in drug discovery.

The work of proteins in cells is often performed in concert with partners. In particular, many processes are initiated or inhibited through specific protein–protein complex formations. With the availability of genome sequences, it has s has been estimated that over 80% of proteins do not operate alone but rather in complexes that are regulated by several mechanisms.

Noncovalent contacts between the side chains of amino acid residues are the basis for protein assembly and protein–protein interactions. These contacts induce a variety of interactions and associations among the proteins that permit the classification of PPIs in several ways, depending upon their persistence, their interaction surface, and their stability.

The study of PPI networks and the global physical organization of cells is needed to provide a better understanding of basic cellular biochemistry and physiology. Disruptions of the normal patterns of PPIs and protein complexes can be causative or indicative of a disease state.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to attract the contribution of different researchers whose activity ranges from the development of biochemical and biophysical methods for detecting PPIs, to the study of diseases related to a disruption of these interactions, in order to produce relevant conclusions on computational approaches and internet resources for studying protein interactions.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
