Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

After the initial COVID-19 breakdown in Wuhan, China, the spread of this newly emerged virus is increasing exponentially in many countries. At the time of writing, the reported number of infected victims is well over 2 M with over 100,000 deaths. Deadly infection is also associated with pneumonia, leading to patients’ unbearable suffering and eventual death.

The global economy is in recession, with unprecedented unemployment in modern times, albeit various stimulus programs have been initiated by several countries. The most affected sectors are transportation, hotels, sporting events, tourism, and other service industries. The economic impact is even more problematic for underdeveloped countries with limited resources.

Prevention is always better than treatment, and social distancing has been promoted or regulated in many parts of the world. In this context, PPE (personal protective equipment) with antiviral-antimicrobial properties should be of the utmost importance for health care workers, old people in nursing homes, children, workers in transportation, and the general public.

This Special Issue will cover the following topics:

  1. Nanofiber/nanoparticle-based masks and gloves with antimicrobial/viral activities.
  2. Nanomaterial-based garments with salient features such as waterproof, UV-blocking, antistatic, and antimicrobial/antiviral properties.
  3. Hand sanitizers with nanoparticles to enhance antimicrobial/antiviral properties.
  4. Surface modification with nanomaterials with antimicrobial/antiviral properties.
  5. Nanomaterials as potential delivery vehicles for vaccine antigens to stabilize vaccine antigens and act as adjuvants.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
