Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Pregnancy is a period of dynamic change in maternal and fetal nutritional demands. Alterations in availability of a wide variety of select nutrients, including amino acids, lipids, glucose, vitamins, etc, have the potential to alter the developmental trajectory, and subsequent function, of organs and organ systems.  Both epidemiological and experimental studies have demonstrated that maternal/fetal malnutrition during pregnancy lead to metabolic changes that are the precursors for the development of metabolic syndrome in adulthood. The pancreas plays a central role in establishing critical metabolic set points and as such, the investigation of nutritional regulation of fetal pancreatic development, and subsequent function, have far-reaching implications for understanding and developing intervention strategies for programmed metabolic health or disease. In this Special Issue, we aim to broaden our understanding of the impact of maternal/fetal nutrient availability of both macro- and micro-nutrients on fetal pancreatic development and function.
